The African Action Congress (AAC) has demanded the arrest of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over a controversial remark directed at broadcaster Seun Okinbaloye.
In a statement dated April 5, 2026, and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Rex I. Elanu, the party described the alleged threat as “dangerous and unacceptable,” warning that such comments could undermine press freedom and democratic accountability.
According to the AAC, the incident reflects a broader trend of what it termed “violent rhetoric and intimidation,” linking the minister to past allegations involving threats against officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as well as heightened political tensions in Rivers State during his time as governor.
The party also cited previously circulated audio recordings in which Wike was allegedly heard making threats against electoral officials, stressing the need for a thorough and independent investigation into the claims.
Calling for swift action, the AAC urged security agencies to act “without fear or favour,” insisting that no individual, regardless of position, should be above the law. It emphasized that protecting journalists and safeguarding civil liberties remain fundamental to a functioning democracy.
The controversy arose following remarks made by Wike during a media briefing in Abuja while responding to Okinbaloye on Politics Today. During the exchange, the anchor had raised concerns about the possibility of Nigeria drifting toward a one-party system amid ongoing political developments.
In response, Wike reportedly said, “If there’s any way to break the screen, I would have shot him,” a statement that has since drawn widespread criticism from civil society groups, media organisations, and opposition figures.
The AAC concluded by calling for the minister’s immediate arrest and prosecution over the remark, as well as any other allegations that may arise from lawful investigations.
