The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has stated that recent violent incidents across parts of Nigeria validate long-standing warnings by its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, renewing its demand for his immediate and unconditional release.
In a statement issued on April 5, 2026, and signed by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group referenced recent attacks highlighted in a viral video by Alex Babir, arguing that the developments align with predictions Kanu had made prior to his arrest in 2021.
IPOB alleged that the attacks were coordinated and not random acts of banditry or communal clashes, maintaining that they reflect a broader and more organized pattern of violence. The group claimed that Kanu had, for years, drawn attention to such threats through his broadcasts and public engagements, but was ignored by authorities.
The statement further asserted that Kanu’s arrest in Kenya in June 2021 and his continued detention were intended to silence his views on Nigeria’s security situation. IPOB also pointed to a 2022 court ruling which, according to the group, discharged him, arguing that his continued custody undermines efforts to address insecurity.
Reiterating its position, IPOB called on the international community, including foreign governments and intelligence agencies, to take seriously what it described as a pattern of coordinated attacks across multiple states. The group maintained that Kanu’s release would allow him to contribute to discussions on resolving the country’s security challenges.
IPOB concluded by urging global stakeholders to intervene, insisting that the situation requires urgent attention while emphasizing its demand for justice and the freedom of its detained leader.
