Terror returned under the cover of darkness this week as heavily armed gunmen stormed a student residence in Kaura Namoda, Zamfara State, abducting several students and reigniting fears over the safety of young Nigerians pursuing education.

According to police authorities, the attackers invaded an off-campus hostel late Wednesday night, seizing seven students before disappearing into the darkness. One of the victims reportedly escaped during the chaos, while security forces have launched operations to rescue the remaining captives.

For residents of the community, the attack was a chilling reminder of the wave of mass abductions that has haunted schools across northern Nigeria over the past decade.

Witnesses described scenes of confusion and panic as gunshots shattered the silence of the night. Students reportedly fled in different directions while frightened residents locked themselves indoors, uncertain of what would happen next.

The latest kidnapping adds to a growing list of attacks targeting students, a trend that has left parents living in constant fear. Since the infamous abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls in 2014, thousands of students have been kidnapped from schools and hostels across the country, turning education into a dangerous pursuit in some regions.

Security analysts warn that the continued targeting of students threatens not only lives but also the future of education in affected communities. Many parents are increasingly reluctant to send their children to school, fearing they could become the next victims.

As rescue efforts continue, families of the abducted students remain trapped in agonizing uncertainty, praying for news of their loved ones’ safe return.

For many Nigerians, the question remains painfully familiar: How many more students must disappear before schools become truly safe?

Once again, a nation’s classrooms have become crime scenes, and once again, families are left waiting for answers in the dark.
