The United Actions For Democracy (UAD) has strongly condemned the reported revocation of the bail granted to activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, describing the development as a calculated attempt by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to silence opposition voices and suppress democratic freedoms in Nigeria.

In a statement issued on June 16, 2026, and signed by its General Secretary, Kunle Wizeman Ajayi, the pro-democracy organisation alleged that the move forms part of a broader plan by the Federal Government to stifle dissent and weaken growing public agitation over worsening insecurity across the country.

According to the group, the reported bail revocation is linked not only to what it described as a planned effort to imprison Sowore but also to ongoing campaigns demanding the rescue of kidnapped children and other victims currently being held by abductors in various parts of Nigeria.

The organisation argued that the development raises serious concerns about democratic rights and political freedom, particularly as the country moves closer to the 2027 general elections. UAD alleged that attempts are being made to prevent what it described as a “real revolutionary” from challenging President Tinubu at the polls.

Rejecting the decision outright, the group questioned the circumstances surrounding the revocation and claimed that the court itself had failed to sit on the previously scheduled adjournment date of June 15. UAD maintained that under such circumstances, it was the court that owed an explanation rather than the defendant being sanctioned.

The organisation further accused the Tinubu administration of exhibiting authoritarian tendencies and warned against any attempt to reverse democratic gains won through years of struggle against military rule.

“President Tinubu cannot reverse the gains of democracy,” the statement declared, as the group compared any perceived crackdown on opposition voices to the era of military dictatorship.

UAD also used the opportunity to renew calls for nationwide mobilisation against insecurity and economic hardship, urging Nigerians to participate in the #TinubuMustGo and #EndInsecurity protests taking place across the country.

The organisation reiterated its demand for the immediate rescue of schoolchildren reportedly abducted in Oyo State, as well as other victims of kidnapping still being held captive by criminal groups nationwide.

The group stressed that it would continue to mobilise citizens and democratic forces against any actions it believes threaten civil liberties, political participation, and the democratic rights secured through years of pro-democracy struggles.

“We in the UAD will mobilize massively against all forms of reversing the true gains of democracy that our organization and some other genuine movements fought the military to win,” the statement concluded.

The development has added to growing political tensions surrounding issues of free speech, opposition activism, insecurity, and preparations for the 2027 elections, with observers expected to closely monitor the legal and political implications of the controversy surrounding Sowore.
