Fresh concerns have emerged over the worsening security crisis in Zamfara State after heavily armed bandits launched a daring late-night invasion of Bakura town in Bakura Local Government Area, shooting a resident, rustling cattle, and raiding the home of a political ally of Governor Dauda Lawal in an attack that has left residents questioning the effectiveness of ongoing security operations.
The Tuesday night assault sent panic across the community as the gunmen reportedly moved through the town with little resistance, attacking residents and looting valuables before escaping.
Among the victims was Sufiyanu Anah, a young resident who sustained gunshot wounds after the attackers opened fire during the invasion. He was said to have been rushed for medical attention, while anxious residents prayed for his recovery.
The assailants also rustled an unspecified number of cattle, dealing another economic blow to families already struggling under the weight of persistent bandit attacks across the state.
In a development that has heightened public attention, the attackers reportedly invaded the residence of Umaru Mandi, the Bakura Ward Chairman under Governor Dauda Lawal’s political structure, and confiscated his mobile phone. The gunmen also seized the phones of Tukur Sama’ila, popularly known as Tukur O C, and his wife before fleeing the community.
Residents described the attack as terrifying, alleging that the armed men operated freely for several minutes, forcing families to hide indoors as fear and confusion engulfed the town.
The latest invasion comes despite repeated assurances by authorities that intensified military operations were degrading criminal networks operating across Zamfara and neighbouring states. However, Tuesday night’s attack has once again raised concerns over the ability of security forces to protect vulnerable rural communities that continue to bear the brunt of relentless bandit violence.
Confirming the incident on Wednesday, security analyst Bakatsine lamented the continued attacks on rural communities, saying the incident underscores the grim reality faced by thousands of Nigerians living in areas plagued by armed banditry.
He noted that many communities continue to lose lives, livestock, property, and their sense of security despite ongoing counter-banditry operations, while wishing Sufiyanu Anah a speedy recovery and praying for lasting peace in the affected community.
The attack is the latest in a series of deadly raids that have continued to haunt Zamfara State, where armed groups have repeatedly carried out killings, kidnappings for ransom, cattle rustling, and large-scale looting, deepening calls for stronger and more effective security measures to halt the bloodshed.
