President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a comprehensive salary increase of between 30 and 80 per cent for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, marking one of the most significant military welfare interventions in recent years as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to strengthen troop morale amid the country’s persistent security challenges.
The salary review, which takes effect from September 1, will benefit approximately 250,000 military personnel across the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force.
With the approval, the Federal Government’s annual salary expenditure on the armed forces will rise from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion, underscoring the administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of service personnel engaged in counter-insurgency, anti-banditry and other internal security operations.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, officers above the rank of Colonel—including Brigadier Generals, Major Generals, Lieutenant Generals and Generals—will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.
Personnel from Colonel down to Warrant Officer will enjoy a 50 per cent increase, while soldiers from Private to Staff Sergeant—the ranks that make up the bulk of frontline combat troops—will receive the highest adjustment of 80 per cent.
The Presidency said the pay review reflects President Tinubu’s recognition of the sacrifices made daily by members of the armed forces in defending the nation’s territorial integrity and combating terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes.
President Tinubu said military personnel deserve the support and appreciation of the nation for their unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” the President said.
He reaffirmed that his administration would continue to prioritise troop welfare alongside the acquisition of modern weapons, advanced technology and improved operational capabilities needed to tackle evolving security threats.
The President further stressed that national development cannot thrive without security, assuring Nigerians that his administration remains committed to deploying every available military and law enforcement resource to eliminate criminal threats and restore lasting peace across the country.
The latest salary adjustment is expected to improve troop morale, reinforce ongoing military operations and further demonstrate the Federal Government’s resolve to support members of the armed forces with better welfare while sustaining the fight against insecurity nationwide.
