A domestic dispute allegedly sparked by a meal has ended in tragedy in Nasarawa State, where a 30-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly beating his 20-year-old wife to death, leaving behind two young children and reigniting concerns over the rising scourge of domestic violence in Nigeria.
The suspect, identified as Musbawu Amodu, was arrested by operatives of the Nasarawa State Police Command following the fatal incident, which occurred in the Angwan Yahaya community of Agyaragu, Obi Local Government Area.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, the suspect was apprehended after a complaint was lodged at the Agyaragu Police Division alleging that he had violently assaulted his wife, inflicting injuries that led to her death.
Police investigations revealed that the couple had engaged in a heated argument after the deceased allegedly declined to prepare food. The disagreement reportedly degenerated into a physical assault, during which the suspect allegedly beat his wife until she sustained fatal injuries.
During interrogation, the suspect reportedly admitted to attacking his wife, claiming he acted in anger after the disagreement escalated.
The victim, who was only 20 years old, died from the injuries allegedly inflicted by her husband, bringing a heartbreaking end to a marriage that had lasted six years.
The tragedy has left the couple’s two children—a boy and a girl—without their mother, while their father now faces prosecution over the alleged crime.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa State, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, condemned the killing in strong terms, describing it as a senseless and avoidable loss of life.
The police chief reiterated the command’s zero-tolerance stance on domestic violence and urged couples to seek lawful and peaceful means of resolving disputes rather than resorting to violence. He assured the public that the suspect would be prosecuted in accordance with the law once investigations are concluded.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the deadly consequences of domestic violence, with rights advocates calling for greater public awareness, stronger protection for vulnerable spouses, and swift justice for victims of abuse.
