Residents and commuters have been thrown into distress following the sudden collapse of a major access road linking Chukuku village in Kuje Area Council and Gwagwalada Area Council after a heavy downpour washed away large portions of the roadway.

The affected road, which serves as a critical transportation link for daily commuters, traders, farmers, and students moving between the two area councils, was severely damaged after persistent rainfall exposed what residents described as a weak structural foundation. The erosion created a deep gully that split the road into two, completely cutting off vehicular movement and leaving the route impassable.

Eyewitnesses at the scene described moments of panic and confusion as the erosion worsened rapidly. Several commuters were stranded, while vehicles approaching the damaged section were forced to turn back. Some residents gathered in shock, watching as the road continued to crumble under the force of the rainwater.

Local residents blamed the incident on poor construction and the absence of proper drainage systems, alleging that the road could not withstand heavy rainfall due to substandard engineering work.

A resident who spoke to Chronicles Reporters lamented that the road had shown signs of weakness long before the collapse.

“This road was not properly done. There was no solid drainage, and now the rain has destroyed everything,” the resident said.

The collapse has disrupted economic and social activities between communities in both area councils, with traders, students, and workers now forced to seek longer alternative routes to reach their destinations.

Authorities and road users have been strongly advised to avoid the affected route for safety reasons, as further erosion could worsen the situation and pose additional risks to commuters and nearby residents.

The incident has also raised fresh concerns about infrastructure quality and the need for proper monitoring of road construction projects across the Federal Capital Territory, particularly in rural and developing communities where roads serve as vital lifelines for movement and economic activity.

Residents are now calling on relevant authorities to urgently intervene and reconstruct the damaged road before the situation escalates into a prolonged transportation crisis affecting both Kuje and Gwagwalada communities.
