The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court sitting in Maitama has adjourned a Public Interest lawsuit challenging the alleged illegal collection of Community Development Levies/Dues by the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) and its Technical Partners.

The suit, filed by Global Integrity Crusade Network (GICN) and marked CV/3763/2024, was mentioned on Friday, March 13, 2026 before Hon. Justice N. C. Nwabulu at High Court 4, Maitama. According to Counsel representing the Claimant, the case questions the legality of the levies allegedly being collected from residents and businesses in AMAC, which are said to exceed the ₦1,000 limit prescribed under Bye-Law No. 14B of 2019.

The Claimant argues that the Council and its Technical Partners have been collecting Community Development Levies/Dues above the legally approved amount, an action they contend violates the existing Bye-Law. At the sitting, both parties confirmed that they had joined issues in the matter. Following this development, Justice Nwabulu adjourned the case to Thursday, May 14, 2026 for hearing.

Speaking after the court session, Edward Omaga Esq. who appeared with Esther Wuese Iorhuna Esq. for the Claimant emphasized the role of lawyers in promoting justice and societal accountability. He noted that legal practitioners have a duty to challenge actions that undermine the rule of law.

The suit is expected to determine whether the levies/dues currently being imposed on residents and businesses within the Abuja Municipal Area Council comply with the provisions of the Council’s Bye-Laws.
