The Secretary General of the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF), Véron Mosengo-Omba, has resigned from his position, bringing to a close a career in international football administration spanning more than three decades.

Mosengo-Omba announced his decision in a statement issued on Sunday from Cairo, Egypt, stating that he would be stepping aside to focus on personal projects after years of service to the sport.

He described his career as one dedicated to using football as a tool for unity, education, and opportunity, adding that the timing of his exit follows the resolution of allegations that had surrounded his tenure.

“After over 30 years of an international professional career dedicated to promoting football that brings people together, I have decided to step down,” he said, noting that he leaves the organisation “with peace of mind and without constraint.”

He also expressed appreciation to CAF President, Patrice Motsepe, as well as colleagues and stakeholders across the continent for their support, while urging continued commitment to the progress recorded within African football.

Mosengo-Omba’s resignation comes against the backdrop of the lingering controversy surrounding the final of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025.

The dispute intensified after CAF overturned Senegal’s 1-0 victory over Morocco in the final, awarding a 3-0 win to the North African side following a protest walk-off by Senegalese players over a penalty decision.

Senegal has since challenged the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), while continuing to assert its claim to the title.

In a symbolic show of defiance, the Senegal national team recently paraded the AFCON trophy ahead of an international friendly in Paris, insisting they remain the rightful champions.

Head coach Pape Thiaw reiterated that the team earned the title on merit, stressing that results on the pitch should determine champions.

Despite the off-field tensions, Senegal continues preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while Morocco now officially recognised by CAF as champions has shifted focus to upcoming competitions under new head coach Mohamed Ouahbi.

CAF has yet to announce a replacement for Mosengo-Omba as the organisation navigates one of its most challenging periods in recent years.
