Fresh panic and anguish have enveloped Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State following the abduction of six Almajiri pupils by suspected terrorists in yet another brazen attack that highlights the worsening security crisis in Nigeria’s North-West.
The attack occurred on Wednesday evening in Unguwar Gere community, where heavily armed assailants reportedly stormed the area at about 6:30 p.m., seizing the young pupils as they returned from a nearby farm.
According to local sources, the children had nearly reached the safety of their village when the terrorists intercepted and forcefully whisked them away, plunging residents into fear and despair.
The abducted pupils have been identified as Abdul Mali Malam, Al Amin Biyar, Abdurrahman Sama Ila, Jamilu Malam, Usumanu Bilya and Abdul Ganiyu Samaila.
In a swift response, residents from neighbouring communities, assisted by soldiers stationed at the Supa Camp in Kuyallo, reportedly mobilised and confronted the attackers in a desperate bid to rescue the children and repel the invasion.
Sources disclosed that the joint effort forced the terrorists to retreat from the community after an exchange. However, despite being repelled, the gunmen succeeded in escaping with the six abducted pupils, leaving their families and the entire community devastated.
The latest incident adds to the growing catalogue of attacks that have turned Birnin Gwari into one of Kaduna State’s most dangerous flashpoints. For years, communities in the area have endured relentless assaults, kidnappings and violent raids by terrorist groups and armed bandits operating across the region.
Security experts have repeatedly warned that the persistent targeting of children and educational activities poses a grave threat to the future of entire communities, with many families now living in constant fear and uncertainty.
Residents have appealed to both state and federal authorities to intensify military operations and ensure the safe return of the abducted children, warning that continued attacks are deepening humanitarian challenges and undermining public confidence in government efforts to restore peace.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had yet to announce any breakthrough in the rescue operation, while anxious relatives continue to await news of their loved ones.
The abduction once again underscores the urgent need for decisive and sustained action against terrorism and criminality in the North-West, where innocent civilians, particularly children, increasingly bear the devastating consequences of a protracted security crisis.
