A serving police sergeant has been taken into custody following allegations that he supplied an AK-47 rifle used in a robbery attack in Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
The arrest came after security operatives apprehended a suspected robber, identified as 30-year-old Justine Gbata from Doka Village. According to security sources, Gbata was captured after an armed attack on a resident, Muhammad Danka of Ankoma Village, who was dispossessed of his red Bajaj motorcycle.
The robbery reportedly occurred around 1:00 p.m. on January 24. Witnesses said the attackers fired several shots from an AK-47 rifle before fleeing into a nearby forest with the stolen motorcycle.
A security source said a joint team of police officers, local vigilantes, and hunters mobilized immediately after the incident and chased the suspects into the forest, leading to the arrest of one suspect. Seven spent AK-47 cartridges were recovered at the scene.
The suspect reportedly sustained injuries during the pursuit and was taken to the General Hospital in Doma for treatment. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed that the rifle used in the attack was supplied by a serving police sergeant attached to the Daudu Division in Benue State.
Following the confession, the sergeant was identified and detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Benue State for further investigation.
Police authorities said efforts are ongoing to track down other members of the robbery gang and recover the stolen motorcycle, assuring the public that investigations into the case are continuing.
