A traditional ruler in Rivers State narrowly escaped death on Sunday evening after gunmen attacked his convoy in Khana Local Government Area.
The monarch, identified as King T. Y. Baridam, Paramount Ruler of the Bangha Community, was returning from an engagement in the Okwale community when the incident occurred at about 5:30 p.m. The attack happened along Tekar Sogho Road, a route that connects the area to the East–West Road.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants, who reportedly emerged from nearby bushes, ambushed the monarch’s vehicle between Taabaa Junction and Sogho and attempted to force it to stop. When the driver refused, the gunmen opened fire on the black Prado Jeep, damaging the windscreen and other parts of the vehicle.
During the attack, King Baridam sustained a gunshot wound to his leg, while his driver was also injured. Both were immediately taken to a hospital, where the monarch is currently receiving treatment.
The Rivers State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday, describing it as a targeted attack by unknown gunmen. Although the exact motive remains unclear, security sources suggested the assailants may have intended to assassinate the traditional ruler. This marks the second time King Baridam has survived an attempt on his life.
Police authorities said patrol teams were swiftly deployed to the area to comb the surroundings and track down those responsible. The Command assured residents that a full investigation is underway and pledged to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The police also urged members of the public to remain calm and provide any useful information that could assist ongoing investigations.
The incident has renewed concerns about the safety of traditional rulers and the growing wave of violent attacks in parts of Rivers State.
