The Edo State Police Command has intercepted a stolen Toyota Camry and recovered an AK-47 rifle hidden inside the vehicle. The driver, who was stopped by police officers, fled the scene during the search. This was revealed in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Edo, SP Moses Joel Yamu, on Saturday.
According to Yamu, the incident occurred during a routine stop-and-search operation at Okpella, where officers intercepted a Toyota Camry with registration number BDG 17 JK. As the police began searching the vehicle, the driver suddenly fled, prompting officers to continue their search. They eventually discovered an AK-47 rifle and a magazine concealed within the car’s engine compartment.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the original owner of the vehicle, identified as Umaru Usman, had been killed and the car stolen in Lagos. The case had already been reported to the Alausa Police Station in Lagos. The police are now pursuing the fleeing suspect, known by the alias “Ahuwa/Soldier,” though his real name remains unknown.
In the meantime, an accomplice has been arrested and has confessed to the crime. The accomplice also revealed that their plan was to transport the stolen vehicle to Otukpo, Benue State, where they intended to sell it. This suspect is currently assisting the police with their ongoing investigation.
Yamu confirmed that both the arrested suspect and the recovered evidence have been handed over to the Lagos State Police Command for further investigation and prosecution.
