The Nursing community in Nigeria has been thrown into mourning following the brutal rape and murder of a student nurse, Miss Chinwendu Achumba, in Imo State, a development that has sparked outrage across the country and renewed concerns over the worsening insecurity facing women and students.
A nurses’ forum strongly condemned the killing, describing the incident as “barbaric, heartbreaking and unacceptable,” while demanding immediate justice for the deceased and accountability from authorities over what it called “the tragic circumstances surrounding her death.”
The group called on the government to provide compensation to the bereaved family, insisting that although no amount of money can heal the pain and trauma suffered by the family, authorities must demonstrate responsibility, empathy and support.
According to the forum, the government must urgently address the growing insecurity around tertiary institutions and student residential environments across Nigeria.
The association also demanded the immediate construction and expansion of secure hostel facilities for Nursing students and other students in tertiary institutions across Imo State, stressing that poor accommodation systems and weak security structures continue to expose students to danger.
It further called for improved security surveillance around campuses, hostels and residential areas, alongside stronger laws and stricter punishments against rape, gender-based violence and crimes against women in the country.
The forum warned security agencies against any attempt to suppress or manipulate investigations surrounding the killing.
“We also call on security agencies to avoid any attempt to sweep this matter under the carpet. The Nigerian people are watching, and the Nursing profession is watching,” the group stated.
It added that the continued killing of innocent Nigerians reflects deep institutional failures and governmental weakness that must be urgently addressed.
“The blood of innocent citizens must stop flowing because of governmental failure and institutional weakness,” the statement added.
The forum expressed solidarity with the family, friends, colleagues and fellow students of the deceased, praying for the peaceful repose of her soul during what it described as an extremely painful moment.
Meanwhile, security operatives have arrested a tyre technician identified as Onyema Okonkwo in connection with the killing.
The suspect was reportedly arrested after investigations linked him to the crime, and he allegedly confessed that he and another man gained access to the victim’s residence where they allegedly took turns raping her before killing her.
Sources revealed that the suspect had allegedly made repeated romantic advances towards the victim, which she reportedly rejected before the tragic incident.
Reports further indicated that during the violent struggle, the deceased reportedly scratched the suspect while attempting to defend herself. Investigators believe the suspect allegedly killed her after realising she could identify him before fleeing with her mobile phone.
The gruesome incident has continued to generate public anger and calls for urgent reforms to protect women and students from sexual violence and violent crimes across Nigeria.
