Nigeria’s newly appointed ambassador to the United States, Kayode Are has taken part in the first meeting of the US–Nigeria Strategic Working Group, held in Abuja. The meeting marked an important step in renewed diplomatic and security engagement between both countries.
The talks came shortly after the United States again designated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern,” a classification announced by US President Donald Trump. Notably, the strategic meeting took place on the same day Nigeria’s presidency officially confirmed the ambassador’s appointment to Washington.
Nigeria’s delegation was led by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, alongside other senior security and government officials. The United States team was headed by Allison Hooker, the US Under Secretary of State, who represented Washington at the discussions.
At the meeting, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in tackling terrorism, banditry, and other security challenges. They also agreed on the need for deeper collaboration to enhance national and regional security through sustained dialogue and joint efforts.
