
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough in its fight against violent crimes with the arrest of a notorious kidnap kingpin, Okon Asuquo Udo, who has been on the run for several months.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Uyo, the Commandâs spokesperson, Timfon John, confirmed that the suspect, a native of Ube village in Okobo Local Government Area, was finally apprehended in his hometown after evading capture for a long period.
John explained that Udo had been on the Commandâs wanted list over his alleged role in multiple abduction cases. According to her, investigations so far have revealed that he played a central role in the kidnapping of a Paramount Ruler in October 2024 and the abduction of the wife of an Executive Chairman in November 2024.
The police further disclosed that the suspect is strongly linked to several other kidnapping operations carried out within Oron, Mbo, and Okobo Local Government Areas.
Part of the statement read: âThe Akwa Ibom State Police Command has successfully apprehended a key suspect involved in several high-profile kidnappings across the state. Acting on credible intelligence on August 13, 2025, at about 11:00 a.m., operatives arrested one Okon Asuquo Udo, male, of Ube village, Okobo Local Government Area. He has long been on the Commandâs wanted list for his alleged involvement in different abduction cases.â
The statement added: âPreliminary findings show that Udo was directly involved in the kidnap of a Paramount Ruler in October 2024, as well as the abduction of an Executive Chairmanâs wife in November 2024. He is also suspected of being part of other kidnapping activities carried out across Oron, Mbo, and Okobo LGAs. The suspect was eventually traced and captured in his home community of Ube, Okobo LGA, after months of being at large.â
The police spokesperson assured that discreet investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest other members of his syndicate, as well as recover the weapons used during their criminal activities.
