Panic has gripped residents of Mabushi District, Abuja, following the partial collapse of a five-storey building in the area. The development has sparked fears over safety and prompted calls for urgent intervention.
Rather than demolish the structure completely, residents told Chronicles Reporters that officials appear to be carrying out makeshift repairs on the damaged section. They described the move as “dangerous engineering gymnastics” that could endanger lives.
According to neighbours, several complaints lodged with the relevant authorities have been ignored. Many of them believe this inaction is due to the involvement of a “powerful” individual connected to the property.
“Making this matter public could save lives,” a concerned resident said. “This building poses serious risks. Instead of pulling it down, they are trying to patch up what has already failed.”
The building sits behind The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Grace City, directly opposite the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) Secretariat, along Ahmadu Bello Way.
Checks by Chronicles Reporters showed that the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) Development Control Department had sealed the structure on July 24, 2025. However, residents insist that the danger has not been addressed, as the building continues to stand despite visible instability.
Many are questioning why the authorities have chosen not to demolish the compromised structure but are instead focusing on patching up the collapsed part.
For residents in the area, the demand remains clear: immediate action is needed to prevent a looming tragedy and guarantee the safety of those living and working nearby.
