The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest of a four-man gang, which included one of its own officers, over allegations of abduction, extortion, and harassment of innocent citizens in Benin City, Edo State.
According to a statement released on Saturday by the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Moses Joel Yamu, the arrests followed the circulation of a viral video in which a victim accused policemen of abducting him, seizing his phone and valuables, and subjecting him to harassment.
In the video, the victim gave a chilling account of his ordeal in the hands of officers who allegedly brutalised and extorted him. He claimed that five armed policemen kidnapped him, accused him of being rich because he was married to an American woman, and then forcefully took his belongings.
In footage obtained by Chronicles Reporters, the visibly shaken man, speaking with his wife by his side in tears, narrated how the incident occurred after he boarded a public bus from work around 8 pm. He said the officers intercepted him near Sapele Road, close to Adesuwa Junction in Benin City, and dragged him into their patrol vehicle after noticing his wife’s picture on his phone profile and confirming she was American.
“They asked me who was on my profile picture. I said it was my wife. They asked if she was American, and I said yes. Instantly, they handcuffed me. My hand is still numb till now,” he recounted.
Following the complaint, Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, ordered an immediate investigation to identify and arrest those involved. On August 15, 2025, operatives of the Ugbowo Surveillance Team tracked down the suspects while they were operating with a silver Toyota Yaris and apprehended them.
Those arrested include Police Inspector Ojo Oloruntobi, alongside three civilians identified as Charles Onah, Joseph Ohis, and Enoma Agho, who were allegedly working with him to terrorise residents of the state.
The police statement read in part: “The Edo State Police Command has dismantled a criminal gang comprising a serving officer and civilians who engaged in robbery, intimidation, and extortion against innocent residents in Benin City. This followed a viral complaint of abduction and harassment by policemen. Acting on these reports, the Commissioner of Police directed that the culprits be tracked and arrested immediately.”
It continued: “On 15th August 2025, operatives of the Ugbowo Surveillance Team intercepted the suspects in a silver Toyota Yaris. A police inspector identified as Ojo Oloruntobi was arrested alongside his accomplices, namely Charles Onah, Joseph Ohis, and Enoma Agho. They were caught with incriminating items linking them to extortion and harassment of residents.”
The statement further condemned the incident, describing it as a disgraceful act. It assured the public that the arrested officer and his collaborators would face justice. CP Agbonika stressed that the Command has zero tolerance for misconduct, corruption, and abuse of office, vowing that rogue officers will be swiftly dismissed, arrested, and prosecuted.
The Commissioner also issued a stern warning to all personnel, insisting that any policeman caught engaging in extortion, brutality, or any corrupt practice will not escape punishment under the law.
