A student in Nasarawa State has accused some officers of the Nigeria Police Force of intimidation, harassment, and extortion after he was forced to part with money under threats.

The victim, identified as Attah Peter Williams, narrated that the incident took place in the early hours of Saturday, August 16, 2025, between 1:30 am and 2:30 am, at a police checkpoint located around College Gate, Ombi 2, Lafia.

According to his account, Williams was heading back to his lodge at Pinnacle Hotel, Kwandere Road, Lafia, after buying malt and bottled water when he was stopped by police operatives who introduced themselves as members of the Anti-Kidnapping and Anti-Cult Squad, attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Shendam Road, Lafia.

“I was stopped at a police checkpoint by officers who said they belonged to the Anti-Cult Squad. The commercial motorcyclist that carried me was allowed to go, but I was held back,” Williams said.

He explained that the officers forcefully collected his phone and searched it without a warrant. Despite not finding anything incriminating, one of the policemen accused him of being a cultist and threatened that if he failed to ‘cooperate,’ he would be detained, tortured, or taken to a location from which he might never return.

Williams further alleged that the officers compelled him to transfer ₦25,000 into an Opay account belonging to one of them and also took ₦12,000 in cash from his pocket, making the total amount extorted from him ₦37,000.

The student stressed that he has verifiable evidence to support his claims, including records of his lodge payments and at least three witnesses who could confirm his movements on the night of the incident.

He also revealed that he has proof of the bank transfer of the ₦25,000 into the officer’s account, alongside details of the exact checkpoint and the identity of the police squad that carried out the act.

Williams identified the suspected team as the Anti-Kidnapping and Anti-Cult Squad, SCID, Shendam Road, Lafia (Coordinates: FGR8+MJ5, Shendam Road, Lafia 950101, Nasarawa).

He is now demanding a full-scale investigation, a refund of the money extorted from him, and adequate protection for both himself and his witnesses, as he fears reprisals from the officers involved.

“I am calling for an immediate probe into the officers who were on duty at Ombi 2, College Gate checkpoint during the stated time. I want my money refunded, protection for myself and my witnesses, and proper disciplinary action taken against the corrupt officers,” Williams insisted.
