The Oyo State Government has unveiled plans to construct a memorial site at Dejo Oyelese Close, Adeyi Avenue, Ibadan, to honor the victims of the tragic Bodija explosion that occurred on January 16, 2024.

Governor Seyi Makinde made this announcement in his latest newsletter, commemorating the first anniversary of the disaster.

Addressing the initiative, Governor Makinde said, “We understand that nothing can bring back the lives lost, but we are committed to building a memorial at the site later this year to honor their memory.”

The governor also noted that the government has been supporting affected families. “The committee I inaugurated to oversee the disbursement of financial support to victims has submitted its report, and payments will be made within the next two weeks,” he confirmed.

As part of the ongoing recovery efforts, Makinde highlighted infrastructure rehabilitation in the affected area. “We have commenced the rehabilitation of roads in the vicinity as part of our broader effort to repair the damage caused by the explosion,” he said.

In his commitment to preventing future tragedies, the governor emphasized the importance of public safety. “We are investing in the security of lives and properties to ensure that preventable disasters like this do not occur again,” he stated.

Governor Makinde also revealed that Executive Order 001, 2024, which focuses on the safe handling and storage of hazardous substances, had been implemented. He called on residents to remain vigilant, saying, “If you see something, say something, so the relevant authorities can act swiftly.”

The explosion, which devastated the Bodija community last year, led to arrests and an ongoing legal case. “Those responsible for storing explosives in the residential area have been arrested, and their case is currently being prosecuted at the Federal High Court in Ibadan,” the governor added.
