The Ogun State Police Command has arrested Adewale Ogoemi Arojah, the son of a prophet, for allegedly impersonating a popular cleric on Facebook and defrauding multiple victims of more than ₦18 million under the guise of offering prayers, spiritual assistance and fake prophecies.

Arojah was arrested by operatives of the Ilaro Division of the Ogun State Police Command following a complaint filed by Muyiwa Akogun, popularly known on Facebook as “Prophet Dr. Muyiwa Akogun,” after members of the public began reporting fraudulent activities allegedly being carried out using his identity.

According to a statement issued on Thursday, October 8, 2026, by the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi B. Babasiyi, the complaint was lodged on October 3, 2026, following reports that an individual had created a duplicated Facebook profile to impersonate the cleric and deceive unsuspecting members of the public.

The police said that following the complaint, the Divisional Police Officer of the Ilaro Division deployed intelligence and detective operatives to identify and apprehend the person behind the alleged impersonation.

According to the Command, sustained technological monitoring and intelligence-led analysis eventually led detectives to a nearby village in Ajegunle, along the Ilaro/Ibogun axis, where Arojah was arrested.

The police said that during interrogation, the suspect confessed to impersonating Prophet Akogun on Facebook.

The Command alleged that Arojah used the cleric’s identity to make fake prophecies and offer purported prayer services to people seeking spiritual assistance, with the victims said to include residents of Nigeria and people living in the diaspora.

Preliminary investigations, according to the police, showed that the suspect monitored the Facebook page of the real Prophet Akogun and identified individuals who appeared to be seeking spiritual help.

The police alleged that Arojah subsequently approached the individuals, gained their confidence by presenting himself as the cleric and then requested and received money from them for prayers, spiritual assistance and other purported services.

The Command put the amount allegedly obtained from the victims through the scheme at more than ₦18 million.

Following his arrest, the suspect was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Eleweran, Abeokuta, where further investigations are being conducted to establish the full extent of the alleged fraud and determine whether other individuals were involved in the operation.

The police said the ongoing investigation would also seek to identify possible accomplices and facilitate prosecution if sufficient evidence is established against the suspect and any other persons found to be involved.

The Command described the arrest as part of its ongoing efforts to tackle online fraud, identity theft and other forms of cybercrime in Ogun State.

The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the operatives of the Ilaro Division for their vigilance, tactical discipline and swift response which led to the arrest.

Ojajuni also reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting residents of the state from both digital and physical threats.

The police subsequently warned members of the public to exercise caution when interacting with religious leaders, celebrities, public figures and other personalities on social media, particularly when financial transactions are involved.

The Command urged social media users to verify the authenticity of accounts before engaging with individuals claiming to be particular personalities and warned against sending money to unverified persons in exchange for spiritual remedies, prayers or promises of supernatural intervention.
