Bandit kingpin Kachalla Mu’azu and six members of his gang have reportedly been killed in a bloody clash with a rival armed group in Zamfara State.
According to security sources quoted by counterinsurgency expert and conflict reporter Zagazola Makama, the incident occurred at about 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 7, around Mada in Gusau Local Government Area of the state.
The sources said Mu’azu and his associates were returning from Yankara Market when members of a rival armed group, who had reportedly laid an ambush along their route, attacked them.
A confrontation subsequently broke out between the two groups, resulting in the reported deaths of Mu’azu and six members of his gang.
Mu’azu was described as a prominent bandit commander linked to criminal activities and attacks on communities in Gusau and other parts of Zamfara State, as well as areas of neighbouring Katsina State.
His death could have implications for the activities of armed groups operating around the Gusau axis, although it remains unclear whether the killing will lead to any immediate improvement in the security situation in the affected communities.
Mada is a settlement in the eastern part of Gusau Local Government Area, located about 32 kilometres from Gusau town, while Yankara is situated along the Gusau-Funtua axis.
Security agencies are expected to continue monitoring the area following the reported clash and work to establish further details about the rival armed groups involved in the incident.
The identities of the other six bandits reportedly killed alongside Mu’azu were not immediately available as of the time of filing this report.
