Troops of the Joint Task Force North-West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have rescued 33 passengers abducted by terrorists in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State after engaging their captors in a fierce gun battle.
The dramatic rescue operation, which took place on Saturday, August 8, 2026, followed credible intelligence received by security forces that terrorists had intercepted and abducted commuters travelling through the Magazu area of Tsafe.
The operation, according to the Nigerian Army, underscores the growing danger posed by armed terrorists along major transportation routes in the North-West, where travellers and rural communities continue to face the threat of abduction and violent attacks.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the JTF North-West Media Information Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, said troops of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, immediately mobilised to the area after receiving information about the abduction.
The troops were supported by personnel of the Nigeria Police Force deployed in Tsafe.
According to the Army, the security forces encountered the terrorists while they were already moving the abducted passengers towards an undisclosed destination.
The ensuing confrontation reportedly forced the terrorists to abandon their captives and flee into the surrounding bushes.
โThe troops engaged the terrorists with effective fire, forcing them to abandon the victims and flee into adjoining bushes,โ the statement said.
With the attackers forced into retreat, the troops moved in and successfully secured all 33 passengers.
The Army said none of the rescued victims sustained any casualty during the operation.
Following the successful rescue, security personnel commenced an exploitation of the surrounding terrain while intensifying efforts to track down the fleeing terrorists.
The operation represents another direct challenge to armed groups operating across Zamfara and other parts of the North-West, where security forces have continued to battle terrorists, bandits and criminal gangs responsible for attacks on communities, kidnappings and disruption of road transportation.
The Theatre Commander of Operation FANSAN YAMMA commended the troops for their prompt response, courage and professionalism, saying their swift intervention prevented the abducted passengers from being taken deeper into terrorist territory.
He reaffirmed the command’s determination to protect civilians, restrict the operational freedom of terrorists and secure major transportation corridors across the North-West.
The command also called on residents and road users to remain vigilant and provide security agencies with timely and credible intelligence on the movements and activities of terrorists and other criminal elements.
The successful rescue comes amid continuing security concerns in Zamfara and neighbouring states, where the ability of armed groups to operate in remote forests and intercept travellers has remained a major challenge for authorities.
For the 33 passengers, however, the operation ended what could have become another prolonged ordeal in the hands of terrorists, as the intervention of the security forces forced their captors to abandon them and run for cover.
