The Chairman of Gwagwalada Area Council, Hon. Mohamed Kasim Ikwa, has declared an end to what he described as the era of “business as usual” in the education sector, warning that corrupt practices, particularly the existence of ghost workers, will no longer be tolerated.

Speaking during a meeting with the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Gwagwalada Branch, comprising head teachers across the area council, Kasim said his administration had commenced a thorough investigation into the state of the education sector and would not hesitate to sanction anyone found culpable of fraud or other sharp practices.

The chairman acknowledged the challenges confronting teachers, stating that he understood their struggles because he had once served as a teacher himself. However, he insisted that the fight against corruption must take precedence to restore integrity and improve the quality of education in the council.

“There will be no more business as usual. I know your pains, but I also know the corrupt practices that have hindered the growth of our education system. Ghost workers must become a thing of the past, and anyone found responsible will face the full consequences of the law,” he declared.

Kasim assured the teachers that his administration would give priority attention to basic education, particularly at the primary school level, describing it as the foundation upon which every child’s future is built.

He promised that concrete reforms were already underway and that teachers and residents of Gwagwalada would soon begin to see rapid improvements in the sector.

The chairman also highlighted his scholarship sponsorship programme for professional courses, explaining that the initiative was designed to promote capacity building and encourage educational advancement among deserving beneficiaries.

Calling on teachers to remain committed to their responsibilities, Kasim urged them to teach with dedication, compassion and a deep sense of purpose.

“Our children are the leaders of tomorrow. They deserve quality education, proper guidance and teachers who are passionate about shaping their future. Let us give them the attention, care and knowledge they need to succeed,” he said.

The meeting ended with renewed assurances from the council chairman that his administration would continue to engage stakeholders in pursuit of a transparent, accountable and result-driven education system capable of transforming learning outcomes across Gwagwalada Area Council.
