Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has formally declared his intention to contest Nigeria’s presidency in 2027 while unveiling a new political alliance between his faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
The alliance was officially announced on Thursday in Ibadan during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between both political groups ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the event, Makinde publicly declared his presidential ambition, stating: “I, Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde, announce my candidacy for the position of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
The development marks a significant political shift within the opposition landscape amid the ongoing leadership crisis within the PDP at the national level.
The agreement is expected to allow candidates loyal to Makinde to contest future elections under the APM platform rather than the PDP, including governorship, National Assembly, and State Assembly races in 2027.
The event attracted supporters, party members, and political stakeholders, many of whom described the alliance as the beginning of a broader political realignment ahead of the next general elections.
During the ceremony, Seyi Bamidele signed the Memorandum of Understanding on behalf of the PDP faction, while Oladele Oyadeji signed on behalf of the APM.
Makinde and the APM National Chairman, Yusuf Dantalle, also endorsed the agreement on behalf of both parties.
Political observers say the alliance could reshape opposition politics ahead of 2027, especially as divisions within the PDP continue to deepen following disputes over the party’s national leadership and recent court rulings.
