
Gwagwalada Area Council has been plunged into deep mourning following the tragic death of the Speaker of the Legislative Arm, Mohammed Ibrahim Ibwa, who reportedly succumbed to injuries sustained in a fatal motor accident along the Kwali–Gwagwalada road.
The late lawmaker was said to have passed away in the early hours of Thursday, May 14, 2026, while receiving treatment at the hospital after the horrific crash that occurred on Wednesday.
Sources revealed that another occupant of the vehicle died instantly at the scene, while Ibwa was rushed to the hospital in critical condition before later giving up the ghost despite efforts by medical personnel to save his life.
Photos from the accident scene showed the vehicle completely mangled from the impact of the collision, raising concerns over the increasing rate of deadly accidents along the ever-busy Kwali–Gwagwalada axis. Authorities are yet to officially confirm the exact cause of the accident as investigations are expected to commence.
The sudden death of the Speaker has sent shockwaves across Gwagwalada and the Federal Capital Territory, with political associates, residents, supporters, and community leaders expressing grief over the painful loss of a man many described as a committed grassroots politician and dedicated public servant.
Until his death, Mohammed Ibrahim Ibwa served as the Speaker of the Gwagwalada Area Council Legislative Arm, where he played active roles in legislative matters and community development within the council.
Meanwhile, the late Speaker has since been laid to rest according to Islamic rites at the Ibwa Muslim Cemetery on Thursday amid tears and emotional scenes from mourners.
The burial ceremony attracted several prominent personalities from across the FCT, including the Chairman of Gwagwalada Area Council, Abubakar Jibrin Giri; the Aguma of Gwagwalada; Chairman-elect of Gwagwalada Area Council, Mohammed Kasim Ikwa; Chairman of Abaji Area Council, Abubakar Umar Abdullahi; alongside political stakeholders, traditional rulers, family members, friends, and sympathizers.
Emotions ran high during the funeral prayers as mourners described the deceased Speaker as a humble leader whose sudden death has created a huge vacuum within the legislative arm and the entire Gwagwalada community.
Special prayers were offered for the repose of his soul, with clerics and mourners praying for Almighty Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.
