Classroom structure collapses as students, staff narrowly escape death; rainy season raises alarm over mass casualty
A civic technology organization, TrackaNG, has issued an urgent warning to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, declaring that Community Grammar School, Oke Ayo, Oke Ado, in Ibadan South West Local Government Area, has become “a disaster waiting to happen” following the collapse of multiple buildings at the institution.
In a report released on Tuesday, the group revealed that the situation escalated dramatically when a classroom structure collapsed just days ago, with students and staff narrowly escaping death.
“Now, the situation has escalated! Just yesterday, a classroom structure collapsed, with students and staff narrowly escaping what could have been a tragic incident,” TrackaNG stated.
‘Unsafe for both students and staff’
According to the organisation, the school — the only mixed secondary school in the entire area — has become dangerously unsafe. Despite repeated appeals to the Ministry of Education, successive commissioners, and the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, no concrete action has been taken.
“The most recent action has only been site inspections since 2025, with no visible results,” TrackaNG lamented.
The group warned that the ongoing rainy season could trigger further structural failures, turning a potential tragedy into a reality.
“With the rainy season here, the risks are even greater, and this is happening in a school where students continue to perform well academically, yet are forced to learn in fear.”
Direct appeal to Governor, local government chairman
Addressing Governor Makinde and Ibadan South-West Local Government Chairman, Kehinde Akande, TrackaNG said: “Dear Governor Seyi Makinde and Hon. Kehinde Akande, Community Grammar School… is under serious threat. The entire school environment has become unsafe for both students and staff.”
The organisation also took aim at government spending priorities, noting that increased allocations to states and local governments have not translated into improved educational infrastructure.
“Public funds must translate into safe learning environments, not dilapidated and abandoned structures.”
Call for immediate rehabilitation
TrackaNG urged authorities to act without delay to prevent the extinction of a vital public institution, calling for:
· Immediate rehabilitation and rebuilding of the school
· Guaranteed safety for students and staff
· Urgent intervention before the rainy season claims lives
“Education should not happen under collapsing roofs. The children of Oke Ayo deserve safety, dignity, and a future,” the group declared.
As of press time, Governor Makinde’s office had not issued an official response to the allegations.
