The Africa Action Congress (AAC) has rejected the outcome of today’s governorship election in Ekiti, describing the exercise as deeply compromised by widespread malpractice, vote-buying, and voter intimidation.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Friday, the party’s state chairman, Makinde Folorunso, said the party was left with no option but to challenge the credibility of the election, insisting that what was witnessed across polling units fell far below democratic standards.
According to him, the electoral process was allegedly hijacked by the ruling political structure, which he accused of turning the exercise into what he described as a “mockery of democracy.” He claimed reports of inducement of voters with cash were recorded in several polling units across the state, undermining the principle of free and fair elections.
The AAC further alleged that its members and supporters were subjected to intimidation and harassment during the voting process, a situation it said created an uneven playing field and discouraged active participation by opposition actors.
The statement also referenced the peace accord signed ahead of the election, noting that the party’s participation was based on expectations of electoral integrity. Folorunso maintained that accepting the outcome under the prevailing circumstances would amount to legitimising what he described as systematic electoral abuse.
Reaffirming its stance, the Africa Action Congress declared that it outrightly rejects the election results and is demanding an immediate and thorough investigation into all reported irregularities. The party called on relevant authorities to ensure accountability and safeguard the credibility of Nigeria’s democratic process.
AAC urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and committed to defending electoral integrity, insisting that the will of the people must not be subverted under any guise.
