Nigeria’s political landscape was thrown into fresh controversy after the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) granted temporary release to former Kaduna State governor, Nasir Ahmad El‑Rufai, following weeks of detention, allowing him to attend the burial of his late mother.

The embattled former governor was reportedly released on compassionate grounds after the death of his mother, Hajiya Umma El‑Rufai, who died in Cairo on Friday, according to family sources.

An aide close to El-Rufai confirmed that the anti-graft commission approved the temporary bail following the family’s bereavement. However, details surrounding the conditions attached to the release remain unclear, fueling speculation about the nature of the detention and the legal grounds for his continued investigation.

As of the time of filing this report, the ICPC has yet to issue any official statement clarifying the circumstances that led to El-Rufai’s detention or the terms of his compassionate release, further deepening public curiosity and political tension.

The development quickly sparked reactions from the El-Rufai family, with his son, Bashir El‑Rufai, launching a blistering attack against the anti-corruption agency.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Bashir described his father’s detention as unlawful while accusing the ICPC of corruption and institutional weakness.

“My beloved great legend of a father (@elrufai) is being released from his unlawful and illegal detention at the hands of one of the most corrupt agencies in the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he wrote.

He further intensified the criticism, calling the commission “a lame excuse of a pathetic institution,” and vowed that the family would not forget the ordeal.

“That is a lame excuse of a pathetic institution. Thank you all for all the support. Our family shall never forget these times. We have overcome, as the El-Rufais,” he added.

The release has reignited political debate around the controversial former governor, who served as Kaduna State governor from 2015 to 2023 and remains one of Nigeria’s most influential and polarizing political figures.

El-Rufai has long been at the center of Nigeria’s political discourse, known for his outspoken views, reform-driven governance style, and frequent clashes with political opponents and civil society groups.

Observers say the circumstances surrounding his detention, which reportedly lasted weeks without detailed public explanation, raise questions about transparency, due process, and political undertones.

As of press time, it remains unclear whether the compassionate release will transition into full bail or whether El-Rufai is expected to return to ICPC custody after attending the burial rites.

With tensions rising and silence from the anti-graft agency, the development is expected to further fuel political debate and scrutiny, particularly as Nigeria’s political climate continues to heat up ahead of emerging realignments and future electoral battles.

For now, the temporary release marks a dramatic twist in an unfolding controversy — one that could reshape political alliances and deepen questions around anti-corruption enforcement in Nigeria.
