The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the recent passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill by the National Assembly, describing the move as a danger to Nigeria’s democratic process.
In a statement on Wednesday, ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi accused the ruling party of acting with what he called “alarming impunity,” despite controlling the majority of state governments across the country. He questioned why the APC would be uneasy about free and fair elections even with significant political dominance.
“With this level of impunity, we pray that the APC does not become the death of our democracy. Almost all the governors are in their party, yet they are afraid of a free and fair election. But Nigerians will never surrender to tyranny. We have seen this before,” Abdullahi wrote on his X handle.
The opposition party argued that the amendment raises concerns about the integrity and transparency of future elections, urging the ruling party to uphold democratic standards.
ADC called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and actively defend the nation’s electoral process, stressing that citizens have previously resisted attempts to undermine democracy and must continue to demand fairness and accountability.
