Tension has erupted in Tungan Maje following allegations by a local Islamic community leader that the Chairman of Gwagwalada Area Council, Hon. Abu Giri, responded with hostility when Islamic scholars visited his office to seek support for an upcoming religious programme.
According to Mohammed Isah Hassan, a community organiser and representative of the Tungan Maje Ulama, the delegation approached the council chairman with the intention of soliciting moral and logistical support for an Islamic Da’awah programme aimed at community development and spiritual growth.
Hassan, however, alleged that instead of receiving a warm and respectful audience, the chairman reacted negatively, making statements that questioned the political loyalty of the Islamic scholars.
“Rather than appreciating those who came to help you gain reward, my chairman resorted to careless talk, alleging that Tungan Maje Ulama are not backing APC,” Hassan wrote.
He further criticised the chairman’s disposition, suggesting that such remarks reflect a misunderstanding of Islamic values and the non-partisan role of religious institutions.
“This claim alone has proven that the man lacks real Islamic orientation. What did you expect from someone who preferred to freely throw his money where there’s no reward?” he stated.
Hassan also drew a sharp contrast between the alleged refusal to support Islamic outreach programmes and what he described as the chairman’s willingness to support other ventures.
“Indeed, when you turn down opportunities to support Islamic Da’awah but freely support hotels, people can clearly see where you stand,” he added.
In a final, strongly worded remark, Hassan expressed his disappointment over what he perceives as misplaced priorities by the council leadership.
“If Abu Giri refused to help Islam, he will help women, Skit na your mate” he wrote.
As of the time of filing this report, Hon. Abu Giri has not issued an official response to the allegations. Efforts by Chronicles Reporters to reach the chairman for clarification were unsuccessful.
The development has sparked conversations within Gwagwalada on the relationship between political leadership, religious communities, and the need for mutual respect regardless of political affiliation.
