A major political realignment has taken place in the Gwagwalada Area Council as a leading chairmanship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party, Rabiu Saba, the incumbent councillor representing Kutunku Ward, Murtala Hassan, and 203 other party members have defected to the All Progressives Congress.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Rabiu Saba said the move was inspired by the “visible achievements” of the outgoing APC-led administration under Abubakar Jibrin Giri. According to him, the group resolved to join the ruling party to support continued growth and development across the council.
The Gwagwalada APC chairman, Ahmed Dan Baba, received the defectors alongside the party’s chairmanship candidate, Usman Yahaya, assuring them of full integration and equal treatment within the party.
In his remarks, Usman Yahaya hailed the decampees for taking what he called a “timely and strategic decision,” promising that his administration would carry everyone along if elected in the February 21, 2026 council elections.
The event drew several top stakeholders, including the APC state chairman for the FCT, Abdulmalik Usman, the outgoing council chairman Abubakar Jibrin Giri, and Zakari Angulu Dobi, all of whom formally welcomed the new members into the party’s fold.
