A trending post on X (formerly Twitter) has sparked comparisons between the President of Argentina and Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as Nigerians continue to express disappointment over the worsening economic situation in the country.
In the viral tweet, a user identified as @UptownOfLagos highlighted the stark contrast between both leaders. “He took office seven months after Mr. Bola Tinubu took office. In 1 year and 6 months, he has pulled 10.9 million Argentinians out of poverty. In one and a half years!! BAT has sinked in more in the same time frame,” the tweet read.
The comparison referred to recent international assessments that reveal Argentina’s significant improvement in poverty reduction under President Javier Milei. The reports indicate that over 10 million Argentines have been lifted out of poverty since Milei assumed office. On the other hand, Nigeria’s economic indicators have worsened since Tinubu was inaugurated, with inflation and unemployment on a steady rise.
The tweet ignited widespread reactions from users, with many expressing deep frustration over Tinubu’s perceived inaction and unfulfilled campaign promises. “BAT ESCOBAR got nothing to offer. You can’t give what you don’t have. 2027 should be make or break for Nigerians,” wrote @Osikhena2014.
Another user, @Omeokachie2, criticized those who continue to defend Tinubu’s government. “Those who are frontline beneficiaries of the ongoing sleeve in Nigeria are asking Nigerians to allow Tinubu to finish the destruction of the country, which he started,” he stated.
Adding weight to the claims, Grok, the artificial intelligence tool developed by xAI, confirmed the accuracy of Milei’s poverty reduction claims in response to a user’s query. “Yes, approximately true. Under Milei, Argentina’s poverty rate fell from a 2024 peak of 53% to ~32% by mid-2025, lifting roughly 10 million people (per some estimates). In contrast, Nigeria’s poverty rate has risen to over 40% under Tinubu, with rural areas at 75%, per World Bank data,” Grok stated.
Reacting to Grok’s confirmation, @UptownOfLagos fired another shot, writing: “A Ronu doubted it, called on Grok, and GROK confirmed it. Bola Tinubu has been doing NOTHING in Asorock.”
Data from the World Bank and Nigeria’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) support these criticisms. Inflation has remained high since mid-2023, and food prices continue to surge, worsening food insecurity and living standards across the country.
In stark contrast, President Milei, a libertarian economist who took office in late 2023, has implemented aggressive economic policies that reportedly slashed inflation and boosted real wages, gaining international praise for his bold reforms.
Meanwhile, back in Nigeria, the cost of living crisis shows no sign of easing. Despite assurances from Tinubu that foundational reforms require time to bear fruit, many Nigerians are growing increasingly impatient and skeptical.
As the online debate rages, one message seems clear: Nigerians are demanding more action and less rhetoric from those in power.
