A 26-year-old man, Nura Mas’ud, has been taken into custody by the Jigawa State Police Command for allegedly igniting his grandmother, resulting in her death.
According to DSP Lawan Adam, the police’s Public Relations Officer, the incident took place on October 8, 2024, in Mu’azu village, located within the Sule Tankarkar Local Government Area.
In a statement released on Saturday, Adam detailed the event: “At approximately 4:00 PM, we received reports of a tragic occurrence. Mas’ud reportedly visited his family home, where he poured petrol on his 60-year-old grandmother, Zuwaira Muhammad, and set her ablaze.”
The elderly woman succumbed to her injuries shortly after being admitted to a hospital, as the fire caused severe damage.
Following the incident, police quickly apprehended Mas’ud, who was subsequently moved to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further inquiries.
During questioning, he confessed to the crime, with preliminary investigations indicating that he has been suffering from mental health issues. Adam noted that Mas’ud has been receiving treatment at Kazaure Psychiatric Hospital.
The police spokesman shared that Mas’ud expressed frustration over his grandmother’s concerns regarding his appearance and health. “He had warned her multiple times, but she did not heed his warnings. In a fit of rage, he purchased gasoline, poured it on her, and ignited the flames,” Adam explained.
