President Bola Tinubu has encouraged candidates who are unhappy with the results of the recent Edo State governorship election to seek redress through the courts.
This statement follows the declaration of Senator Monday Okpebholo from the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the election winner, a result confirmed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday. In a release from Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Tinubu extended his congratulations to Okpebholo for his triumph over his competitors.
“The President urges all aggrieved candidates to pursue their grievances through legal means,” the statement read.
Tinubu also acknowledged the efforts of APC national leaders, Edo party leaders, and governors who contributed to this victory. He highlighted that the win reflects the populace’s support for the ruling party’s ideals and its commitment to economic reform and enhancing the quality of life for Nigerians.
He advised Okpebholo to regard his win not as a reason for celebration but as a mandate for service. Tinubu encouraged him to show generosity by engaging with his political opponents and fostering unity among Edo’s residents to promote development.
Additionally, the President recognized other candidates in the election for their roles in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy, emphasizing that such peaceful contests showcase the nation’s stability.
Tinubu commended the people of Edo for their orderly conduct during the election, indicating a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic evolution over the past 25 years.
“I appreciate INEC and our security agencies for their tireless efforts in ensuring a smooth and peaceful electoral process. INEC has reaffirmed its dedication to conducting free and fair elections in our country,” he concluded.
