The ongoing conflict in Gaza saw a significant escalation on Saturday as Hamas fighters killed eight Israeli soldiers in a targeted attack in Rafah. The soldiers were traveling in military vehicles when they were ambushed with rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs). This incident marks one of the deadliest days for Israeli forces in the region in recent months as the ground invasion intensifies.
Hamas has claimed responsibility for the attack, describing it as a “complex ambush against enemy vehicles” in the Tal as-Sultan district of southern Rafah city. The Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s armed wing, issued a statement detailing the operation. According to their account, they fired Yassin-105 RPGs at a D9 military bulldozer, resulting in multiple casualties among Israeli soldiers. A subsequent rescue force vehicle was also attacked, leading to its destruction and the death of all its occupants.
The Israeli army confirmed the deaths of the eight soldiers, stating they “fell during operational activity in southern Gaza” but did not provide further details. Israeli military spokesperson Daniel Hagari announced that an investigation would be conducted to determine the specifics of the ambush.
“We are working to disarm all the fighters to prevent Hamas from targeting civilians again like on October 7,” Hagari said in a televised statement. “Today, we received another reminder of the high price we are paying because of this war, and we have soldiers ready to sacrifice their lives to defend Israel.”
Since the ground invasion of Gaza began on October 27, at least 307 Israeli troops have been killed and thousands more wounded. The conflict has also taken a devastating toll on the Palestinian population. Gaza’s health ministry reports that at least 37,296 Palestinians, predominantly women, children, and the elderly, have died since the outbreak of hostilities on October 7.
Saturday’s fatalities are expected to intensify calls for a ceasefire and increase public outrage in Israel. The recent spike in violence echoes a similarly deadly incident in January, when 21 Israeli troops were killed in a single attack by Palestinian fighters in central Gaza.
The rising death toll and continued violence underscore the urgent need for a resolution to the conflict, as both sides endure significant losses.
