The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, has cautioned judicial officers against succumbing to public opinions, emotions, or sentiments in their duties. Speaking at the opening session of a two-day workshop organized by the Court of Appeal for the review of the 2023 election petition tribunals/court and appeals in Abuja on Monday, May 20, Justice Ariwoola emphasized the importance of adhering strictly to the law.
He stressed that no amount of threat or intimidation should lead a judge to deviate from constitutional and legal principles. The CJN noted that political matters often dominate judicial activities due to the strict time frames imposed by electoral laws, which require prompt hearings and decisions. He acknowledged the intense attention and emotions associated with political cases, which can make judicial work more challenging and sometimes dangerous.
Justice Ariwoola highlighted the issue of media trials, where the media attempts to influence judicial decisions through public opinion. He firmly stated that such tactics should not sway judicial officers into making unconstitutional decisions.
Additionally, Justice Ariwoola warned against the abuse of discretionary powers by judges. He reminded judicial officers of the significant trust the public places in them and the high expectations they must meet. He emphasized that judges must work diligently to maintain public trust and integrity by delivering impartial judgments free from sentiments, emotions, nepotism, or other external influences.
“Our conduct and disposition must respond to the yearnings and aspirations of the generality of the citizenry. We are not in our respective positions to serve ourselves, but the Nigerian masses; and the best way we can serve them is by doing what will make them feel safe in our hands and also trust us to always deliver the right judgment that will not be tainted by sentiments, emotions, nepotism or other extraneous considerations,” Justice Ariwoola stated.
He concluded by reminding judicial officers that they represent divine judgment on earth and must uphold their responsibilities with the utmost integrity.
