A family gathering in Lagos State turned tragic on Monday when an argument between two cousins escalated into violence, resulting in one cousin fatally stabbing the other.

The incident took place in the early hours at a family event in the Alimosho area. According to a report from the Lagos State Police Command, the suspect, who is related to the victim, fled the scene immediately following the attack.

Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the incident, noting that the suspect is currently on the run, prompting a manhunt to locate him.

According to Hundeyin, a woman alerted authorities to the conflict between her son, Ganiyu Ibrahim, and his cousin, Afeez Akeem, which led to the violent confrontation.

The police statement detailed that “the altercation occurred around 7 a.m. when Ganiyu and Afeez became embroiled in a heated argument that quickly turned physical. Ganiyu allegedly grabbed a bottle and stabbed Afeez in the left side of his chest.”

Following the stabbing, Afeez was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead by medical personnel. Detectives were promptly dispatched to the scene to gather evidence and take photographs.

The family has reportedly declined an autopsy, opting instead to conduct Akeem’s burial according to Islamic traditions.

“The suspect remains at large, and we are actively investigating the case while making every effort to apprehend him,” Hundeyin added.
