In the early hours of Wednesday, two serious truck accidents resulted in the death of a driver’s mate and injuries to three others. Assistant Division Officer Alex King Nartey from the Public Affairs Department of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) reported that the first incident occurred at Anyaa Last Stop. A truck carrying soft drinks from Agyen Kotoku to Tarkwa overturned, leading to the tragic death of the 30-year-old mate, who was on his first day of work.

“It was reported that the mate was just starting his job. Unfortunately, he was confirmed dead after being rushed to the hospital in another vehicle,” Nartey explained. Initial investigations indicated that the truck lost control after a pickup crossed its path, forcing the driver to swerve. This maneuver caused the truck to mount a nearby pavement and ultimately overturn, crushing the mate beneath it.

Nartey expressed dismay at the actions of bystanders, who seemed more interested in retrieving spilled soft drinks than assisting the injured.

The second accident occurred along the Ofankor-Achimota road, where a banana truck also overturned, injuring three individuals: the driver, the mate, and a female passenger. “Our firefighters worked to cool down the truck to prevent any potential explosion from the heat,” Nartey noted. “While we were focused on crowd safety, it was frustrating to see so many people rushing to grab drinks instead of helping.”

The second accident caused significant road blockage, and authorities are currently conducting investigations to uncover its cause.
