The Nigeria Police Force has issued a directive for all its units to remain vigilant amid the anticipated anniversary of #EndSARS protests, along with demonstrations addressing other national issues throughout October 2024.
A police wireless communication obtained by SaharaReporters on Friday details instructions from the Department of Operations in Abuja, sent to various police formations, including zonal commands and state units. Dated October 7, 2024, the message emphasizes the need for preparedness.
The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has instructed all police commissioners to be ready to address any situations that may arise from the planned protests.
The memo states: “There is a likelihood of nationwide #EndSARS protest anniversary on 20/10/2024 and protests regarding other issues starting from 09/10/2024. All police commands must be on guard to handle any eventualities. Protection of all government infrastructures, police stations, and critical facilities—such as network installations, electricity generation and distribution, and water corporations—is crucial. Compliance with these directives is of utmost importance.”
The communication specifically urges police commissioners in various locations, including Abakaliki, Abeokuta, Ado-Ekiti, Akure, Asaba, Awka, Benin, Bauchi, Birnin-Kebbi, Calabar, Damaturu, and others, to implement these measures effectively.
The police are preparing to maintain order and ensure the safety of key national assets as the anniversary approaches.
