An investigation by SaharaReporters into the Govspend public payments portal has uncovered substantial expenditures on tyres by President Bola Tinubu’s administration. In just three days, the Presidency spent a staggering N366 million on tyres.

The breakdown of the spending reveals that N42.8 million was disbursed on June 22, 2023, for State House tyres. On June 24, 2023, another N86.2 million was spent, listed under “Purchase of Tyres to State House.”

Further scrutiny shows two significant payments on May 21, 2024. The first was N38 million for the supply of five S600/222 armored bulletproof tyres (255-720-r490ac). On the same day, an additional N200.5 million was spent on tyres for bulletproof vehicles at the State House in Abuja.

These findings, showing a total expenditure of N366 million on tyres within three days, have sparked concerns about the transparency and efficiency of public spending under Tinubu’s administration.

The revelations have intensified worries over the Tinubu administration’s spending priorities, especially as Nigeria grapples with revenue shortages, rising debt, and increasing debt servicing costs. Despite government assurances of fiscal prudence, experts suggest there is still a long way to go in achieving genuine financial discipline.
