Omoyele Sowore, the convener of the #RevolutionNow Movement, has announced that a significant number of Nigerians will gather at the Nigeria Police Force headquarters in Abuja on August 29. This mobilization is to show support for Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), following his summons by the police.
Sowore, who is also a former presidential candidate for the African Action Congress (AAC), shared this information on his X account on Wednesday. He further revealed that the protest would extend to the FCT Police Command and the Abattoir Police Detention Centre, located in the Apo area of Abuja, where demonstrators will demand the immediate release of all #EndBadGovernance protesters currently held in detention.
In his post, Sowore stated, “On August 29th, 2024, ALL roads lead to the Nigerian Police Force @Policeng Headquarters in Abuja, the FCT Police Command @FCT_PoliceNG, and the Abattoir Police Detention Center at Apo Area of Abuja. This will be a show of solidarity with the @NLCHeadquarters President @JoeAjaero94024, as well as a demand for the immediate release of all #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protesters across the country!”
He added, “We refuse to be enslaved by fascists in our lifetime! #FearlessInOctober #RevolutionNow.”
Earlier on Monday, SaharaReporters disclosed that Joe Ajaero had been summoned by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Intelligence Response Team (IRT), over accusations including “criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime.”
The police invitation, detailed in an official letter, instructed Ajaero to appear for an interview on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at the IRT Complex in the Guzape District of Abuja. The letter stated that Ajaero had become a person of interest in their ongoing investigation.
In response, Ajaero’s legal representatives from Falana & Falana’s Chambers informed the Inspector General of Police that their client could not attend the interview on the scheduled date due to prior engagements. The letter, dated August 20, 2024, and signed by Samuel Ogala Esq., proposed Wednesday, August 29, 2024, as an alternative date for the interview.
Furthermore, the NLC demanded that the police disclose the specific allegations against Ajaero, citing Section 36 of the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantees the right to a fair hearing, including the right to be informed of the charges.
