A bill proposing the creation of Tiga State from the existing Kano State is prepared for presentation at the Senate. Titled “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Alteration) (Creation of Tiga State) Bill, 2024,” it is sponsored by Senator Kawu Sumaiman AbdulRahman (Kano South).

Kano State, which currently has 44 local government areas, is one of the states with the highest voting population in Nigeria. The bill was set to be introduced for its first reading on Wednesday, but the Senate adjourned plenary to honor Hon. Olaide Adewale Akinremi, a member of the House of Representatives who passed away at age 51. Consequently, the bill, listed on Wednesday’s Order Paper, was postponed to Thursday.

Kano is situated in Nigeria’s North West, a geo-political zone that already has the highest number of states. In comparison, the North East, North Central, South South, and South West geo-political zones each have 6 states, the South East has 5 states, and the North West has 7 states.
