An early Monday accident near Dangwaro International Market in Kano’s metropolitan area resulted in the deaths of 25 people and injuries to 53 others.
The incident involved travelers who were being transported in a trailer carrying cows, en route to southern Nigeria from Maiduguri. The trailer collided with another vehicle and overturned.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander in Kano, Ibrahim Abdullahi, reported that the accident involved an IVECO trailer with the license plate XA 311 ZB. “We received a call at about 03:15 am on July 1, 2024. Upon receiving the information, we quickly dispatched our personnel and vehicle to the scene of the incident to rescue the victims at 03:30 am,” Abdullahi said.
According to Abdullahi, the accident was caused by excessive speed, dangerous driving, and overloading, which resulted in a loss of control. During the rescue operation, the team recovered six motorcycles, 10 mobile phones, goats, rams, maize, and N400,000 in cash.
“All the victims were immediately transported to Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital Kano for urgent medical attention. The doctors on duty confirmed 25 deaths among the victims,” Abdullahi stated.
He also cautioned motorists against the unsafe practice of transporting animals and goods along with human beings.
