Residents of Shavoh community in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital, have appealed to Governor Agbu Kefas to urgently address the poor infrastructure and inadequate learning facilities at Government Day Secondary School, Shavoh, where students reportedly sit on the floor during lessons due to a shortage of seats.

Photographs obtained by ChroniclesReporters show students sitting on the floor while receiving lessons, highlighting the difficult learning conditions at the school and raising concerns about the availability of basic educational facilities in a community located within the state capital.

The residents said the school was grappling with several challenges, including inadequate classrooms, insufficient seats for students, the absence of a staffroom for teachers and a lack of security personnel to protect the premises against vandalism and other criminal activities.

According to the residents, the shortage of essential facilities has made teaching and learning increasingly difficult for both students and teachers, prompting calls for urgent government intervention.

In a message sent to the media, the residents questioned whether Shavoh community was benefiting from the development initiatives of the Kefas administration, despite its contribution to the governor’s electoral victory.

“The community request to know whether they are not part of Taraba that benefit the dividence of democracy His Excellency Coln Agabu Kefas provides to Tarabians,” the residents said.

They also expressed disappointment over what they described as the failure to fulfil a promise to provide school uniforms for students of the institution.

According to them, the delay in supplying the uniforms had discouraged students, teachers and parents, further deepening concerns about the condition of education in the community.

“The one that disturbed most is the uniforms promised by His Excellency to the school, yet to be given, and that has seriously discouraged the students, teachers and parents of this community,” they said.

The residents urged Kefas to intervene urgently, insisting that Shavoh should not be excluded from the state’s educational development programmes.

They argued that the community had supported the governor during the election and remained willing to support him in the 2027 elections, expressing hope that their concerns would receive the attention they deserved.

“We appeal to His Excellency to as a matter of urgency consider Shavoh community hence, we also voted for him and will still vote for him come 2027,” the residents added.

The community is calling on the state government to provide adequate classrooms and seats, construct a staffroom for teachers, deploy security personnel to protect the school and fulfil the reported promise to supply uniforms to the students.

The situation has raised concerns about the learning environment at Government Day Secondary School, Shavoh, with residents stressing that students require a safe and adequately equipped environment to pursue their education effectively.

They expressed hope that the Kefas administration would address the reported deficiencies and extend its educational interventions to the community.

Efforts to reach the Taraba State Government for comments on the concerns raised by the residents were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
