The Oyo State Government has intensified efforts to unravel the circumstances surrounding the abduction of pupils and teachers in Esinele and Yawota communities of Oriire Local Government Area, throwing open its Judicial Commission of Inquiry to the public and inviting fresh evidence, documents and written memoranda as scrutiny over the incident deepens.
The move comes amid mounting public anger over the worsening wave of kidnappings targeting schools across Nigeria and growing concerns that glaring security failures may have left vulnerable communities exposed to criminal attacks.
The Judicial Commission of Inquiry, inaugurated by Governor Seyi Makinde on July 31, 2026, has been mandated to establish the full facts behind the mass abduction, determine whether warning signs were ignored, examine the actions and response of security agencies before, during and after the incident, and recommend concrete measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
In a public notice issued on Monday, the commission appealed to residents, eyewitnesses, community leaders, security personnel and every individual with relevant information to assist its investigation by submitting evidence capable of shedding light on what transpired.
According to the notice, the commission is particularly interested in information relating to the events leading to the abduction, the prevailing security situation in the affected communities, the emergency response mounted by relevant authorities, and practical recommendations that could strengthen the protection of schools and rural communities against future attacks.
The commission directed that all written memoranda should contain the submitter’s full name, contact details and any supporting documents where applicable.
Submissions may be delivered physically at the Conference Room, Office of the Head of Service, State Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, or sent electronically through oysjceoriireabduction@gmail.com.
The panel fixed August 14, 2026, as the deadline for submissions, stressing that all memoranda should be addressed to the Secretary, Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the Abduction of Students and Teachers in Esinele and Yawota Communities, Oriire Local Government Area, Oyo State.
Governor Makinde constituted the commission following widespread concern over the incident, charging members of the panel to conduct a thorough, transparent and impartial investigation that will uncover the truth, identify weaknesses in the security architecture and recommend lasting solutions.
The inquiry is expected to produce findings that could shape future security policies in Oyo State, particularly regarding the protection of schools, teachers and children in rural communities increasingly threatened by criminal gangs.
The latest development comes as insecurity continues to dominate national discourse, with repeated attacks on schools and communities fuelling calls for stronger intelligence gathering, improved emergency response systems and greater accountability from security institutions responsible for safeguarding lives and property.
