One of Zamfara State’s most feared bandit commanders, Kachalla Sani Yellow, has been killed in Anka Local Government Area, ending the reign of a notorious warlord linked to years of deadly attacks, mass abductions, cattle rustling and violent raids across communities in Nigeria’s North-West.
ChroniclesReporters gathered that conflicting accounts have emerged over the circumstances surrounding his death, with local sources and security officials giving different versions of how the notorious bandit leader met his end.
One account claimed Yellow was shot dead on Friday at Dan Jibga Market in Anka by gunmen believed to be loyal to rival bandit kingpin Dogo Gide. According to the report, the attackers ambushed him in broad daylight and opened fire, killing him instantly before fleeing the scene.
Residents familiar with the activities of armed groups in the area said the killing reflects the growing power struggle among rival bandit factions competing for territorial control and influence across Zamfara State.
However, another version attributed his death to a coordinated security offensive involving security personnel and members of the Maiduguri Special Vigilantes, who were recently deployed to reinforce counter-banditry operations in parts of Zamfara. Security sources said the operation targeted criminal hideouts in the Anka axis, where Yellow was reportedly neutralised alongside other suspected fighters.
The Zamfara State Police Command has confirmed Yellow’s death but distanced itself from the operation, saying it only verified that the notorious bandit commander had been killed and could not confirm how the operation was carried out.
Kachalla Sani Yellow was widely regarded as one of the most influential bandit leaders operating across the forests of Anka, Bukkuyum, Maru and neighbouring communities. He was allegedly responsible for coordinating numerous attacks on villages, mass kidnappings for ransom, cattle rustling, extortion and the imposition of illegal levies on rural communities, making him one of the most wanted bandit commanders in the North-West.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that fresh violence has erupted in parts of Tsafe Local Government Area, with armed men suspected to be loyal to another notorious bandit leader, Adamu Aliero, allegedly attacking several communities, killing at least two residents and abducting more than 60 others in what local sources described as possible reprisal attacks following Yellow’s death.
