In a development being hailed as one of the most significant diplomatic breakthroughs of the decade, United States President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian have signed the historic Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), a landmark peace agreement aimed at ending months of conflict, restoring regional stability, and reopening the vital Strait of Hormuz.

The agreement, brokered by Pakistan and electronically signed by both leaders on Thursday, marks a dramatic turning point in relations between Washington and Tehran after a period of escalating tensions that had raised fears of a wider regional war and threatened global energy security.

Announcing the breakthrough, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif revealed that the accord had received the endorsement of all parties involved.

“I am honoured to announce that the historic Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding has been electronically signed today between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Memorandum has been signed by honourable Presidents of both the countries and also endorsed by me as the mediator,” Sharif declared.

He said the signing reflected the determination of both governments to pursue diplomacy over confrontation.

“The signing of this agreement at the highest level of the respective governments demonstrates the commitment of both sides to a diplomatic resolution of the conflict,” he added.

Under the terms of the agreement, the Islamic Republic of Iran is expected to immediately reopen the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategic maritime routes through which a significant portion of global oil supplies passes. In a reciprocal move, the United States will instantly lift its naval blockade, paving the way for the restoration of commercial shipping and energy exports through the critical waterway.

“Islamabad MoU shall enter into force with immediate effect and as a first step, Islamic Republic of Iran will instantly reopen the Strait of Hormuz and the United States of America will immediately lift the naval blockade,” Sharif stated.

Confirmation of the agreement also came from the Iranian Embassy in India, which announced that President Pezeshkian and President Trump had signed the memorandum digitally and remotely, formally committing both nations to the terms of the accord.

According to reports, the memorandum contains far-reaching provisions designed to end hostilities on all fronts. United States officials indicated that Iran has committed not to develop or acquire a nuclear weapon, while both sides agreed to pursue mechanisms aimed at permanently ending the conflict and preventing future escalation.

The agreement also establishes a framework for continued negotiations on broader security concerns, sanctions-related issues, and regional stability, with diplomats describing it as the beginning of a new chapter rather than the end of the peace process.

Sharif reserved special praise for President Trump, crediting the American leader’s diplomatic approach for helping secure the breakthrough.

“I offer my heartfelt congratulations and sincere appreciation to the President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, whose steadfast commitment to diplomacy and preference for peaceful resolution have once again helped end a conflict that could have led to devastating consequences for the region and beyond,” the Pakistani leader said.

The peace accord has already generated cautious optimism across international capitals, financial markets, and energy sectors. Analysts believe the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz could ease pressure on global oil markets, lower shipping risks, and reduce fears of a prolonged regional conflict.

While significant challenges remain and implementation of the agreement will be closely watched, the Islamabad Memorandum is already being viewed as a historic diplomatic achievement—one that may have averted a wider war and opened a pathway toward lasting peace between two long-standing adversaries.

For a world that has spent months watching tensions spiral toward the brink, the signing of the Islamabad Peace Accord represents a rare triumph of diplomacy over conflict and a renewed hope for stability in one of the world’s most volatile regions.
