The Federal Government has approved a ₦1 trillion Metropolitan Rail Service for Kano State, a development announced just three days after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf declared his defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Governor Yusuf shared the news while addressing members of Kano State’s contingent at the 2025 National Qur’anic Recitation Competition in Borno State. He described the rail project as a transformative initiative that will reshape urban transportation in the state.
“The decision to realign with the Federal Government was strategic and aimed at unlocking critical development opportunities for Kano,” Yusuf said. “This rail service is a landmark project that will modernize our public transport, ease traffic congestion, and stimulate economic growth.”
The governor added that the system would offer a reliable, affordable, and efficient mass transit option connecting key districts across Kano, while boosting trade, attracting investors, and improving residents’ quality of life.
Yusuf also assured that the state government would collaborate with federal agencies to guarantee transparent implementation and ensure the people of Kano fully benefit from the project.
“This initiative is historic for our state. We are committed to working with the Federal Government to ensure it is executed to the highest standards,” he stated.
The ₦1 trillion Metropolitan Rail Service is poised to become one of the largest infrastructure investments in Kano’s history, promising to redefine the city’s transport landscape once completed.
